Carol organized and performed at a sold out benefit concert for Christopher Rodriguez and his family which was held at Yoshis World Class Jazz Club in Oakland, California on March 24th, 2008. Christopher is a ten year old boy who was recently shot while taking a piano lesson and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Much needed money was raised for the International Bird Rescue and Research Center www.ibbrc.org They rescued and rehabilitated many of the birds impacted by the devastating Cosco Busan oil spill in the San Francisco Bay. The cast of performers included Grammy-nominated pianist Matt Herskowitz, Carol Alban and other members of the Bay Area Chamber Symphony, Kenny Washington, Laurie Antonioli, the San Francisco Flute Quartet, and many others.

Originally from New York City, Matt Herskowitz has lived in Montréal for the last six years. Hes a graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and The Juilliard School of Music in New York. Hes won many International Prizes, such as the Pro Piano Recital Series Competition, which allowed him to give his New York debut in 1994 in the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. He is also the winner of first prizes at the 1997 Orford Festival International Piano Competitions. Matt's performances there led to a recording of Glazunov's Piano Concerto no. 2 with I Musici de Montreal for Chandos records in 1998, which was hailed as by far the best performance on CD by Strad magazine.
musical personae and bewildered by the arbitrary segregation of jazz and popular Matts deft layering of jazz improvisation over written work has led him to many collaborations. As composer, soloist and ensemble member, he performs and records regularly with Absolute Ensemble, a New York-based crossover contemporary chamber band. Their first release on Enja records, Absolution, which features Matt as composer and soloist on Serial Blues, was nominated for a Grammy in 2001. Matt was also featured on the Swiss television series Melting Pot New York on the recording of Serial Blues. Matts first solo recording, Gabriels Message (CCnC Records), features his original arrangements and compositions based on Christmas themes, and has received world-wide critical acclaim. The legendary Dave Brubeck writes, This CD (Gabriel's Message) is technically flawless... light years advanced harmonically... (Matt) is a giant!

In 2004, Matts solo video-taped recording for the BRAVO channel was first aired. His performance features a mix of his original music and arrangements in jazz, pop and contemporary classical styles. In February 2005 Matt performed at the RIDEAU showcase in Quebec City, where he won two prizes for his performance; the Prix Galaxie, given to best emerging artist, and the Prix des Diffuseurs Européan, which sponsors a tour of France for his trio.

In 2002 Matt composed an original film score for a silent avant-garde French short film, which was performed live with the film at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater. His piece was one of six short films screened with new music performed live by Parabola, a New York-based ensemble specializing in new film music. Other contributing composers included renowned film composers Carter Burwell and Stephen Endelman. In 2005 Matt performed again with Parabola music of Carter Burwell in two sound plays by the Coen Brothers and Charlie Kaufman in New York and London. The show featured renowned actors Meryl Streep, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Hope Davis, among others. Matts other film contributions include the soundtrack of the 2003 Oscar-nominated animated film Les Triplettes de Belleville. His performance includes a raucous jazz-style improvisation on a Bach prelude, entitled Bach à la Jazz. Matt also recorded an extensive solo piano improvisation for the soundtrack of the film La Face Cachée de la Lune, directed by Robert Lepage.

As a songwriter, Matt has collaborated with many artists and producers, including pop diva Lara Fabian and French pop-rock singer Sylvie Cobo. One of his songs with Ms. Fabian, Inévitablement, was released in March 2003 on the debut album of French singer Nolwenn Leroy, which was no.1 in France for several weeks. The song later became a single in 2004. Another of their collaborations, Avant, is now released on the new album of French singer Daniel Levy, Le Coeur Ouvert. Matt and Sylvie have just released their first album together, with Félix award-winning Montreal producer and saxophonist Charles Papasoff, on the Montreal label Disques Tempête.

In 1998, Matt gave the Canadian premiere of his Chorale and Variations on a Theme of Dave Brubeck, an original piece for piano and chamber orchestra, with the Ensemble Contemporain de Montreal, broadcast on Radio-Canadas Chaine Culturelle. The piece combines jazz and contemporary classical idioms. Dave Brubeck, upon hearing the piece, contacted Matt, and has since played a very supportive role in the development of his career.

Matt currently tours extensively throughout Europe and Canada in solo and chamber recitals, and with the critically acclaimed Herskowitz Rozenblatt Project (HRP), a group which features original music and arrangements by himself and drummer David Rozenblatt. HRP has performed in Germany at the Hamburg and Bremen International Music Festivals, in France at the Rhino Jazz Festival, in New York City, presented by the Lyric Chamber Music Society of New York, at the Luzerne Music Center Jazz Series in Lake Luzerne, NY and in Naples, Florida with the Philadelphia Piano Quartet on the Classic Chamber Concerts series. Their first CD, Forget Me Not, was released in September 2005 in Montreal on the Disques Tout Crin label, where it has already received much critical acclaim.

Carol organized and performed at the sold-out benefit concert for Christopher Rodriguez at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland. Carol Alban was on the advisory board for the Galway Master Class on July 15th, 2007 in Napa, California. She and Nancy Tyler (The Alban Tyler Duo) performed at the Atrium Concert that morning. Carol also assisted Lady Galway with the teen portion of the Master Class.

Carol Alban - Flautist and Composer. Carol Alban is an active teacher and performer in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is Principal Flutist with the Bay Area Chamber Symphony. Carol is very active in the San Francisco area "flute scene" and is the founder of the Alban Trio, the Bay Area Flute Fest and the San Francisco Flute Quartet. She began her music studies on the piano and started playing the flute at the age of nine. Carol studied privately with Paul Renzi, former Principal Flutist with the San Francisco Symphony, while attending San Francisco State University as a Music Major with an emphasis in Flute Performance. Some other flute instructors/mentors have included Julie McKenzie the Principal Flutist with the San Francisco Opera, Janet See, and April King, former protege of Julius Baker. She is recording two albums of her own at the moment. Besides concert music, Carol also composes for film. The song, "Down in the Delta" which she co-wrote with Alvenson Moore was used in the film "Character is Destiny" (Dreamweaver Films) and Carol Alban composed the soundtrack for "Goodbye, My Love". The title track was co-written with Alvenson Moore. Her music was used in the I.D.A. documentary, "Wild Beauty Betrayed".

Carol Alban provides elegant live music for all kinds of events (weddings, parties, receptions, etc.) and performs in several ensembles including the Alban Trio (flute, violin, cello). --------------------~Some Past Performances~----------------- September 12th, 2005 Concerned about the plight of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Carol contacted the Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco about holding a benefit concert to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Cantor Roslyn Barak graciously organized the star-studded concert which included performances by San Francisco Symphony Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, Frederica von Stade, Wesla Whitfield and Mike Greensill, flautist Carol Alban, grammy award-winning cellist Emil Miland, members of the San Francisco Symphony and DAVKA, featuring violinist Daniel Hoffman. Over $16,000 was raised for hurricane relief efforts. Carol Alban's latest composition for solo flute, "Elegy" (which she dedicated to the hurricane victims) had its premiere performance at the Sept. 12th benefit concert and was very well received. "That was beautiful!" said Michael Tilson Thomas (after hearing Carol perform it at the concert). On October 15th, 2005 another Katrina benefit was held at the Julian Morgan Center for the Arts. Carol Alban was asked to perform at this event that included all kinds of entertainers including the hilarious Will Durst and the poignant Anne Galjour. Much fun was had and much needed money was raised! - Carol Alban has performed throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and most recently in New York City. She has organized and performed in numerous concerts at the majestic Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland including the Tsunami Relief Concert which featured performances by Carol Alban with Miles Graber (piano), Patti Weiss (violin) , Daniel Hoffman with Klez-x, Dylan Snodgrass(piano), Nancy Tyler (flute), soprano Katya Roemer, Francis Lockwood (piano), Philip Gelb (shakuhachi), Suellen Primost (cello) and Katrina (Katie") Wreede (violist and former member of the Turtle Island Quartet). Other past performances include Petchitecture, a very special fundraising event for PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support) at the Gift Center in San Francisco, many gallery receptions including the Martin Lawrence Gallery Receptions for Chagall's Circus Suite and the Ali Golkar Show, the Fort Mason "Photo SF" International Photography Exhibition, the Berkeley Free Folk Festival and the Piedmont Jazz Festival.
